Chichibu japanese whisky

Introduction

Chichibu is a Japanese single malt whisky. It’s made at the distillery of the same name and it’s one of the great hidden gems in Japanese whisky. The distillery was founded in 2008 and creates artisanal spirits using natural spring water from Mount Chichibu, volcanic mountain range near Tokyo. All their whiskies are matured between 6 to 18 years before bottling.

Edition 2019 is an incredible value for money offering at under $40,000 yen (roughly $350 USD). It’s bottled at 43% abv and has been matured for 7 years in oak casks (ex-bourbon).

Chichibu japanese whisky

Chichibu is a Japanese whisky distillery located in the foothills of Mount Fuji. It was founded in 2008 by Masataka Taketsuru, who along with his wife Rita Hayashi Taketsuru, had been sent to Scotland by their employer Suntory to learn how to make whisky at the Cardhu distillery. After returning home and setting up shop, they began producing Chichibu japanese whisky single malt whisky using malts from different distilleries including Yamazaki and Yoichi. The first batch was sold exclusively at their onsite bar; however, it’s now available for purchase online as well.

The range includes three expressions: The Gentlemen’s Reserve (their entry level blend), Master’s Select (a higher quality blend), and Pure Malt 12-year old—the only single malt in the lineup.

Edition 2019

This is a limited-edition single-malt whisky, which means that it’s only available for a limited time and in limited supply. The Chichibu japanese whisky distillery is one of the oldest in Japan, and their product has won several awards.

The Japanese whisky industry has grown rapidly over the past decade, with companies like Suntory (makers of Yamazaki) leading the charge. This particular blend features sherry casks from Spain’s Jerez region, giving it a distinct flavor profile from other Japanese whiskies (which tend to be more influenced by Scottish style).

Over ice, with a slice of orange, or even in a cocktail—this Japanese single malt will do the trick.

Whether you’re a whisky purist or just looking for an alternative to the usual mixers, Chichibu is sure to be a hit. Here are a few ideas:

  • Use as a mixer. The smooth nature of this Japanese single malt means that it’s great in cocktails and over ice. Try adding it to your favorite whiskey sour recipe, or use it in place of the rye whiskey called for in an old fashioned.
  • Use in traditional drinks. Chichibu’s clean flavor makes it ideal for mixing with soda water and lemon juice—the classic highball cocktail! Or try substituting Chichibu for Scotch in an old fashioned; its light body works well with this cocktail’s rich flavors like bitters and sugar syrup.
