The Courvoisier house, founded in 1765 by Pierre Ferrand (born at Vizille near Grenoble around 1730), was one of the great houses of French brandy distilling for over two centuries. Its success is largely attributed to a man named Alexandre Henri Dubied, who joined the Maison Ferrand in 1853 and became its managing director 12 years later, at the age of 25. Consequently, his idea in 1915 to create a high-end aged expression gave birth to the Vieille Réserve. In 1922, Alexandre Henri Dubied had the foresight to purchase Baccarat’s crystal glassware factory, thus ensuring that all crystal decanters produced by Baccarat could hold premium cognac; moreover, this famous crystal decanter brand also became associated with premium cognac offered by Maison Ferrand.
