It’s 40 years old, and is more expensive than its younger counterparts because it’s so rare. Founded in 1824, The Macallan has always been bottled at the most appropriate time; this means that only a few years after acquisition the whisky is ready to be bottled and sold. The distillery lies on the western shore of Scotland’s Speyside region, a site chosen by Macallan founder Alexander Reid, an enterprising man who was on intimate terms with many of Europe’s royal houses.
