The Macallan 1976 29 year old is a spectacular whisky. Aged at least 29 years in first fill Oloroso sherry casks, it has a rich and complex nose, showing sherry and fruit cake with an underlying layer of cherry for instance. The palate is also rich, with more fruitcake than on the nose and a hint of nutmeg. Rich and luscious with a long, satisfying finish that hints at tobacco smoke rather than the campfire smoke notes which can emerge from some other sherried whiskys aged this long.
This Macallan was distilled in 1976 and bottled nine years later in 1985. It is made from a combination of two separate distillations, as were most of Macallan’s whiskies at this time. Bottled at cask strength, without chill filtration, it’s very fruity on the nose – with a big sweetness to it.

An exceptional 29 year old, one of the oldest and most prestigious members of The Macallan family. This single malt was drawn from a cask stored in America and bottled at 29 years of age. You’ll want a glass of this Macallan 1976 29 year old when you hear the price, but keep it to yourself when you do. It’s one of the most expensive whiskies we carry, and is made from excellent casks that produce high quality single malt Scotch whisky. The distillery continues to produce some of the finest whiskies in the world today, despite its relatively recent origin. Macallan was originally founded in 1824 as a farm distillery on an estate in Speyside near Craigellachie, however it did not produce its first whisky until 1863 when a new still house was built by brothers Hugh and Robert Hay. The distillery remained with the family for six generations until it was purchased by Seagrams in 1930. Only two years later it was then sold again to Hiram Walker (who already owned Benriach) and stayed with them until it became part of Allied Domecq’s portfolio in 1998 when they merged with Pedro Domecq. After being sold off again to Pernod-Ricard in 2001, it became one of their premium single malt offerings alongside brands such as Glenlivet at global scale.
