The Macallan Edition No. 4 was bottled at 48% ABV in an edition of only 600 bottles worldwide, making it one of the rarest whiskies ever created by The Macallan.
the malts used for each edition have been selected by the macallan’s master whisky maker bob dalgarno, who has developed each one to showcase different characteristics of a type of cask. this will be repeated for each subsequent edition.
bob dalgarno has been with macallan for over 30 years and worked with the company for longer than anyone else. he has chosen to use different types of cask to create a unique flavour profile, which will be repeated for each subsequent edition.
macallan edition no. 4 has been bottled at 48% abv and is non-chill filtered to preserve all levels of flavour and character that would otherwise be lost if it was chill filtered before bottling.

This expression showcases a selection of rare sherry casks, including one first fill Sherry butt filled in 1926 and another first fill Sherry hogshead filled in 1973, both ex-bourbon barrel matured for 25 years. Due to the high quality of these casks and the low strength of this whisky, its flavour profile is quite delicate; however, it still carries some rich notes from the sherry maturation.
nose: vanilla, oak wood, cinnamon, mixed peels and citrus
Nose: Vanilla, oak wood, cinnamon, mixed peels and citrus.
Vanilla is the most dominant smell. Oak wood is the second most dominant smell. Cinnamon is the third most dominant smell. Citrus is also present but not as strong as vanilla and oak wood
palate: ginger spice, nutmeg and black pepper, dark chocolate
Palate is the middle section of the tongue and is used to describe the taste of a whisky. It is also known as ‘mid-palate’ or ‘body’.
Ginger spice, nutmeg and black pepper are all flavours found in Macallan Edition No 4. Dark chocolate is also a flavour found in Macallan Edition No 4.
finish: orange zest and rich cocoa
The Macallan Edition 4 is a finishing whisky. It’s aged in sherry casks for about 15 years, but what happens at the end of that process is just as important as everything else that goes into making it.
The finish on this whisky has been described as “orange zest and rich cocoa.” That’s because the final product is blended from three different types of single malt: Sherry, Bourbon and Port. The first two are well-known and loved by whiskey lovers, but port? Not so much—but it adds an interesting dimension to this complex drink.
So what does it taste like? Well…it depends on where you buy it! You see, each bottle will be different based on which casks were used during its production (and how long they were in there). But even then there are many more variables involved: age at bottling; type of cask; size of cask; level of charring…the list goes on and on. So while some bottles might taste slightly sweeter than others with more oak notes present (like vanilla), other bottles will have stronger citrus flavors like orange zest or lemon peel instead…and so forth!
Conclusion
macallan edition no 4 is a complex whisky with layers of rich flavours. the rich dark florals and spicy notes, combined with the smooth vanilla sweetness all blend together to create a truly exceptional dram that represents macallan in its finest form.
