The Archival Series has launched at The Macallan’s Speyside home in Scotland, celebrating the rich history and legacy of The Macallan.
The Macallan is a distillery that is located in Speyside, Scotland. It’s one of the oldest and most famous distilleries in the world.
The distillery has a rich history, with its roots dating back to 1824 when Alexander Reid built an illicit still on his farm near Craigellachie. In 1833 he obtained a license to produce whisky under The Macallan name (then spelled Machallan) which had belonged to his wife’s family since circa 1746.

The limited edition collection features artwork from The Macallan’s Fine and Rare Archive, which was created in 1927 by Joseph Hobbs. Each of the four bottles in this series will feature illustrations from the 1780s to the 1910s, drawn by hand and showcasing the heritage of The Macallan Estate.
To celebrate the company’s 200th anniversary in 2020, The Macallan is releasing an art series featuring four limited-edition bottles that display illustrations of the estate over the past two centuries. Each bottle will feature a different drawing representing a different decade—1820-1830, 1830-1840, 1840-1850 and 1850-1900—and show how The Macallan has evolved over time through its architecture and landscapes.
Each bottle celebrates a moment in time that is unique to The Macallan’s remarkable history:
Each bottle celebrates a moment in time that is unique to The Macallan’s remarkable history:
- 1824 – A “bird’s eye” view of Easter Elchies House, where The Macallan was founded by Alexander Reid in 1824.
- 1909 – This year marks the inauguration of the Distillery Manager’s Association of Scotland and its first meeting at The Macallan Distillery.
- 1937 – Macallan was the first distillery to be visited by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during their tour of Scotland. They were greeted by an official group from the local council before touring around the distillery with Mr Charles Grant (Macallan’s Managing Director) and Mr John Dewar & Sons Ltd Chairman Sir Thomas Dewar & Sons Ltd).
1824 – A “bird’s eye” view of Easter Elchies House, where The Macallan was founded by Alexander Reid in 1824.
The Macallan 1824 is a reference to the year The Macallan was founded by Alexander Reid in Easter Elchies House. This house was built for Reid’s family and named after their original home, Elchies. It is located in Speyside, Scotland.
The bird’s eye view shows the home from above with its surrounding landscape.
1924 – Inspired by an illustration commissioned by Robert Gordon & Co., showing one of their ships docking at the World Trade Center in New York.
The ship was called The Macallan (macallan folio 2) and it carried whisky to New York. It was built in 1924 in Glasgow by Robert Gordon and Company, who owned it for several decades. We’ve taken inspiration from the illustration commissioned by Robert Gordon & Co., showing one of their ships docking at the World Trade Center in New York.
1948 – Celebrating the launch of The Macallan-Glenlivet 3 Wood, created from whisky in oak sherry casks from Jerez, Spain, and two types of American oak cask.
Called The Macallan-Glenlivet 3 Wood, this limited edition whisky was created in celebration of the launch of a new range of single malt whiskies that used oak sherry casks from Jerez, Spain. Only 1,000 bottles were produced and they were sold exclusively through Selfridges & Co. in London.
The Macallan-Glenlivet 3 Wood is made with two types of American oak cask: one type matured at The Macallan’s traditional Speyside distillery; and another type matured at Glenlivet Distillery (owned by Chivas Brothers Ltd.) in Edinburgh, Scotland macallan folio 2.
This whisky was bottled without chill filtration and has been naturally colored using E150a caramel coloring during maturation so it retains its natural rich amber coloration from being aged in charred oak barrels for 18 years before bottling at cask strength 53% ABV (100 proof).
1979 – A look back at an archive illustration for marketing materials for The Macallan-Glenlivet Natural Color 12 Years Old.
The bottle is inspired by a 1979 archive illustration for marketing materials for The Macallan-Glenlivet Natural Color 12 Years Old. In its original form, the bottle was intended to communicate the idea of “natural” coloring—a style of distillation that was popular in the 1970s. Today’s iteration takes this concept further with a striking new design that uses color to express how much time has passed since your last dram macallan folio 2.
This new series shows how much there is to know about macallan
