Founded in 1835 by Jean-Baptiste Otard, Napoleon’s wine and spirits supplier. The original recipe for Otard’s 1875 Liqueur Cognac was created in 1840. The recipe predates the Medoc’s classification system, so it is labeled ‘old blend’.

Otard’s 1875 Liqueur Cognac Bot.1940s is a wonderful bottle of cognac from the early 1940. It has been matured for more than 60 years in 1st and 2nd fill bourbon casks. The color is a deep rich amber, with a very full and complex nose of rich fruits with outstanding developed oak notes, along with notes of cinnamon, caramelized oranges and delicious orange marmalade. On the palate it is full bodied and voluminous, with rich layers of fruit and sweet spices like nutmeg and clove. This is an excellent example of Otard at its best!

Otard’s 1875 Liqueur was first produced in 1840 and was based on the recipe of Marais, who sold it to De Layfayette, who in turn sold it to the Albiniz family, where Guillaume Renaudin took over as master blender. The brand stayed with the family until it was purchased by Philip H. Farquhar and became a subsidiary of Allied Domecq, along with Martell, Rémy Martin and Courvoisier. In 2001, Bacardi Ltd purchased Allied Domecq for £14 billion (US$21 billion).
