The Macallan is a single malt Scotch whisky produced by the Macallan Distillery Company Ltd. in Craigellachie, Banffshire, Scotland. The company was founded in 1824 when James Hay, a blender and distributor of blended whiskies from London who had fallen upon hard times during the Highland Potato Famine, took over the lease for the distillery’s extensive property holdings.
Macallan is one of the most famous distilleries in Scotland and has won numerous awards for its spirits; it produces several different types of whisky including traditional single malts as well as more recent blends and vattings (blended from various casks).
Region: Speyside
The Macallan distillery is located in the Speyside region of Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, who purchased the site of an old mill in Craigellachie, Moray. The first spirit was distilled on Christmas Eve 1824 and the business rapidly expanded to include a second still house within a few years.
In 1896 Alexander Mackenzie purchased The Macallan Distillery from James Buchanan & Co., Edinburgh, who had owned it since 1860. He also bought other properties including Benromach Distillery and Glendullan Estate amongst others at this time giving him control over a large number of distilleries across Scotland.
Macallan has been under the ownership of Pernod Ricard since 1971 but despite this change there have been no major changes or transformations with regards to production methods over recent years – which given their history demonstrates just how important tradition and continuity are when making such fine whiskies!
